Jane Austen

Persuasion

Persuasion was published in 1817, six months after Jane Austen’s death, and is the last novel she completed in full.
The novel tells the story of Anne Elliot, now in her late 20s, the daughter of a vain and improvident baronet, Sir Walter Elliot. The family is in debt, and in order to save money they rent their noble property to a retired Admiral and his wife. This brings Anne into unexpected and initially unwelcome contact with the brother of the Admiral’s wife, Captain Frederick Wentworth. Eight years previously, Wentworth had proposed to Anne, only to be rejected by her after she was persuaded by an older friend that he was an unsuitable match. He reacted angrily to this rejection, and she has had no contact with him since.

honestly, i decided to pick this book after i’d seen the trailer for the new netflix adaptation. i’ve never heard a lot about this novel, and i was quite prejudiced before i started reading it. it’s said to be one of the best novels austen ever wrote, but there was only one question on my mind – what about pride&prejudice then?

well, now i’m taking my words back because this one really will be one of my favourite of austen’s novels so far. i would say, it’s also one of the most romantic ones of hers. seriously, that letter of captain wentworth with confession of his feelings to anne deeply pierced my heart. it was so tender and yet passionate.

Not as popular as P&P, but still a lovely story ☺️

death. I have loved none but you. Unjust I may have been, weak and resentful I have been, but never inconstant

singular in his case; and it is singularity which often makes the worst part of our suffering, as it always does of our conduct.
