Beatrix Hoffman

Beatrix Rebecca Hoffman is an American historian best known for her research on health care rights and reform. She has written extensively on the intersection of immigration and access to health care. Her notable books include The Wages of Sickness (2001) and Borders of Care (2025).

Born in the United States, Beatrix Hoffman's academic career focused on American history and social movements. She became a professor at Northern Illinois University, where she chaired the department of history. During her 29-year career at NIU, she received research support from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, and the American Council of Learned Societies.

Her first major book, The Wages of Sickness (2001), examined the politics of health insurance during the Progressive Era. In 2003, she published Health Care Reform and Social Movements in the United States in the American Journal of Public Health, further establishing her expertise. Hoffman's work has consistently addressed the political struggles over access to health care throughout American history.

In 2025, Hoffman published Borders of Care: Immigrants, Migrants, and the Fight for Health Care in the United States. In the book, she examines how immigrants have both been excluded from and contributed to the American healthcare system.

"Often scapegoated as a burden on the health care system, immigrants have strengthened it through their responses to systemic exclusion," Hoffman writes.

She traces this dynamic from the mid-19th century to the present, showing how activists and providers worked to expand care despite legal and social barriers.

Borders of Care analyses how structures in both the health and immigration systems have resisted reform. Hoffman also demonstrates how immigrants founded hospitals and clinics, served as practitioners, and advocated for safer workplaces and broader access to healthcare. She argues that these contributions advanced the idea of health care as a universal right.

Professor Beatrix Hoffman retired in 2025 after nearly three decades at NIU.
