Joe Bedford

Joe Bedford is a British writer known for his debut novel, A Bad Decade for Good People, published in June 2023 by Parthian Books. He is also known for his wide-ranging short stories that have earned him numerous awards.

Joe Bedford was born in Doncaster, UK. In 2008, he graduated from Lancaster University with a BA Hons in English Literature with Creative Writing & Practice. Speaking about his education, he said, "It was at Lancaster that I learned to craft my voice, honing it through countless stories and essays."

In 2020, he completed his MA in Creative Writing by Independent Project from Lancaster University. Arts Council England later awarded him a grant for developing his creative practice.

In 2021, he received a fully-funded M4C studentship to pursue a Creative Writing PhD at the University of Leicester. Under the supervision of Dr Jonathan Taylor and others, he started a novel investigating the relationship between nature, nationhood, and race.

His short stories have appeared in multiple literary journals, such as 3:AM, Adbusters, and Disclaimer. His work is also regularly featured in anthologies, such as Leicester Writes, and he has performed his pieces at literary festivals like Brighton Fringe and the Small Wonder Festival.

His debut novel, A Bad Decade for Good People, was longlisted for the Grindstone Novel Prize in 2020. Joe discussed the story, "This book reflects the complex times we live in, capturing the human spirit amidst chaos."

Bedford has also won various awards for his short stories, including first place at Leicester Writes (2022) and Waterstones Write & Raise (2019). He has been recognized as a runner-up or highly commended in several other prestigious competitions, such as the Aurora Prize for Writing (2023) and the Evening Standard Stories Festival prize (2023).

Alongside his work, Joe hosts Bovine Cemetery, a regular short fiction performance night at Brighton’s Komedia theatre.
