ABOUT THE BOOK

As one of the best college football players in history, Andrew Luck helped resurrect a struggling Stanford Cardinal football program. Luck’s meteoric rise to stardom culminated in consecutive 10-win seasons for the Cardinal, along with back-to-back appearances in BCS bowl games. Playing in a sophisticated, pro-style offense, Luck mesmerized fans and football pundits alike, with veteran NFL draft analyst Rob Rang describing Luck as “the best quarterback AND elite prospect…I’ve scouted, including every Senior Bowl since 2001.” When Luck stayed in school after the 2010–2011 season – potentially giving up millions – the nation suddenly wondered: who is this guy?

MEET THE AUTHOR

Andrew Soler has published poetry and short stories while working as a newspaper journalist. After selling gas masks and chopping wood in an industrial lumberyard, he quit his job to finish college and earned a BA, Political Science. Andrew then spent five years teaching English, History and creative writing in the bay area. He is interested in provocative music, muscle cars, gritty movies and beatnik literature.

EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK

Andrew Luck’s success in high school foreshadowed his amazing collegiate career. In high school, he made an instant impression, starting on the freshman team before a collarbone fracture. According to his high school coach, Eliot Allen, not only was Luck the team’s best quarterback, he was also “the best safety, punter, and field-goal kicker.” Rather than allowing the painful collarbone injury to derail his football career, Luck instead worked even harder to improve and, not surprisingly, was named varsity starter his sophomore year, a position he would hold until his graduation.

Luck put up mind-blowing statistics during his high school career, throwing for 7,139 yards, 53 touchdowns and also rushing for 2,085 yards. The iconic game that cemented Luck’s high school legacy, however, occurred his junior year in a season-ending playoff loss to powerhouse Cypress Falls High School. Playing inside vast Reliant Stadium, home to the NFL’s Houston Texans, Luck put up a gritty performance, absolutely shredding Cypress Falls to the tune of 339 passing yards and four touchdowns.

With celebrity college coaches fawning over this young Texas gunslinger – a group that included Nick Saban, Bob Stoops, and Chris Peterson, among others – Andrew Luck shocked the recruiting world by committing to Jim Harbaugh at Stanford, a football program on the heels of a disastrous 1–11 season. Clearly, Andrew Luck was forging his own path, on his terms, regardless of outside pressure – a subtle character trait that would later emerge when it came time to declare for the NFL draft.
