The author starts with the educational system of ancient India, Greece, and Rome and pays special attention to early Christian education. Then, he reviews the monastic education of the Middle ages with its tendency to scholasticism and the growth of the first universities. Further, the book goes to early realism, the educational tradition in the first American colonies, the growth of nationalism, the transition to industrial training in education, and the development of public schools.
