The following book was written by William Hooper Councill, who was a former African-American slave and the first president of Huntsville Normal School, which is known today as Alabama Agricultural and Mechanical University in Normal, Alabama. Here, he appeals to his brethren regarding the importance of participating in paid labor work through the lens of Christianity, economic considerations, and social mobility.
