and I’ve been going up the fire escape

to see this lady in the hotel

and she shows me letters from her son

in France, and it is a very small room

full of wine bottles and sadness,

and sometimes I leave her a little money,

and when I go down the fire escape

there’s the cat again and

she rubs against my legs and

as I go to the car

she follows, and I’ve got to be careful

when I start up, but not too much so:

she’s pretty smart, she knows

the car is not her friend.

and one day I went to see the lady

and she was dead. I mean, she wasn’t there

life still there

Having a bunch of cats around is good. If you’re feeling bad, you just look at the cats, you’ll feel better, because they know that everything is, just as it is. There’s nothing to get excited about. They just know. They’re saviors. The more cats you have, the longer you live. If you have a hundred cats, you’ll live ten times longer than if you have ten. Someday this will be discovered, and people will have a thousand cats and live forever. It’s truly ridiculous

I don’t like love as a command, as a search. it must come to you, like a hungry cat at the door

Animals are inspirational. They don’t know how to lie. They are natural forces. TV can make me ill in five minutes, but I can look at an animal for hours and find nothing but grace and glory, life as it should be.

He wasn’t frightened of me. He walked up purring and rubbed against one of my legs. I was a good guy and he knew it. Animals knew things like that. They had an instinct.
