Lydia is dead. But they don't know this yet … So begins the story of this exquisite debut novel, about a Chinese American family living in 1970s small-town Ohio. Lydia is the favorite child of Marilyn and James Lee; their middle daughter, a girl who inherited her mother's bright blue eyes and her father's jet-black hair. Her parents are determined that Lydia will fulfill the dreams they were unable to pursue—in Marilyn's case that her daughter become a doctor rather than a homemaker, in James's case that Lydia be popular at school, a girl with a busy social life and the center of every party.

The story is able to lastly learn how to raise the children without favouritism, be assertive, but not to be put upon. I shouted here, as additonal to be a pro with that people identitybis always in process, represented, and addressed in cultural system. And it connecting with the history which play a critical role in social movements. Therefore, people cannot speak for very long in assumption of differences without acknowledging others.

This book told me about a family issues that might happend in toxic relationship. James' family is not a healthy family, it described by the title on this book.

I think this book is meaningful. It has deep moral value about family. Love it.

“Not with Lydia making a face like that. People will think she looks like that all the time. Pick a nice one.”
