Around the heavenly throne, John contemplates “presbyters”, who are characterized by a rich symbolism numerical (twenty-four), chromatic (white, golden) and anthropological (thrones, cloaks, crowns, sitting). Like all symbols, this group brings forth a veiled message, that is unveiled by paying attention to the presentation (Ap 4,4) and interaction (4–5; 7,9–17; 11,15–18; 14,1–5; 19,1–8).
In the twenty-four presbyters, the author introduces the features that characterise the church and those who represent it liturgically: the theocentrism and Christcentrism of life; the importance of the liturgy as a real possibility of communion with transcendence; adoration of God as expression of cult and creatural condition; a unity that enhances and is enhanced with universality; the royal and priestly dignity of the redeemed; victory gained by means of persevering faithfulness. Leadership and representatives before God are those who win and stand out for their integrity and subsequent example of life, those who incarnate the unity and diversity of the Church and give testimony of jointly responsible collegiality. Living Techs of the Word, they are priests of a priestly people, who have access to the Sancta Sanctorum as mediators between God and “saints”.
