Rick Shefchik

Rick Shefchik is an American music & sports writer and author of several non-fiction books and novels.

Rick Shefchik was born in Duluth, Minnesota. He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1974 and began his career in journalism at the Duluth News-Tribune, where he worked for three years.

Afterward, he spent 26 years at the St. Paul Pioneer Press in various roles, including media and music critic, features writer, columnist, and sportswriter. In December 2006, he left the Pioneer Press to focus on writing books.

Shefchik has authored four novels, two works of non-fiction, and three privately-published golf club histories.

Shefchik's first novel, Amen Corner, was published in 2007 by Poisoned Pen Press. It is the first in a series of sports-related thrillers featuring ex-Minneapolis police detective Sam Skarda.

Green Monster, the second book in the series, was published in 2008. His most recent Sam Skarda novel, Frozen Tundra, was published in 2010. It deals with a potential ownership takeover of the Green Bay Packers.

In 2011, Shefchik's stand-alone rock 'n' roll thriller, Rather See You Dead, was published as an e-book. It is based on a possible meeting between Elvis Presley and John Lennon in 1960.

In 2012, Shefchik published his first non-fiction book, From Fields to Fairways: Classic Golf Clubs of Minnesota. It is considered the definitive golf history book of the state, featuring stories and photos dating back to 1893.

His most recent book, Everybody's Heard About the Bird: The True Story of 1960s Rock 'n' Roll in Minnesota, was published in 2015 and became Amazon's most popular work in musical history. It features interviews with dozens of musicians, promoters, deejays, and managers, as well as 150 vintage photographs.

Shefchik is currently working on a novel about gangsters and politicians in Minnesota during the 1920s and 1930s, from Prohibition to the Depression.

Rick Shefchik is also a musician. He has been playing guitar for 50 years. Shefchik has written at least that many songs and has played in a half-dozen bands.

Rick Shefchik resides in Stillwater, Minnesota, with his wife, Barbara.
