Zainab Boladale

Zainab Boladale is a Nigerian-Irish television presenter, journalist, and author, best known for her work on RTÉ's news2day and Nationwide. She contributed significantly to the Irish media as the first person of African descent to work in the RTÉ newsroom.

Zainab Boladale was born in Lagos, Nigeria. She moved to Ennis, County Clare, Ireland, with her family at four. Growing up in Ireland, she gained unique insights into Nigerian and Irish cultures. This rich cultural background was crucial in shaping her perspective and career path.

At 17, she enrolled at Dublin City University to study Journalism. She contributed to Irish publications such as The Irish Independent, The Clare People, and The College View.

In 2017, Zainab made her television debut as a presenter on RTÉ's children's program news2day, becoming the first news anchor of African heritage at RTÉ. Her role on news2day involved presenting international stories to young Irish audiences. Her passion for storytelling led her to join RTÉ Nationwide in 2019, where she has covered a range of compelling stories, from tales of personal resilience to notable achievements within the Irish community.

Zainab's ability to connect with people and tell their stories is a hallmark of her journalism. She emphasises the importance of creating an environment where people feel comfortable sharing their experiences, perspectives and emotions. Reflecting on her role, she has said, "My strength as a journalist lies in my ability to make genuine connections and put people at ease".

In addition to her work as a journalist, Zainab Boladale is a public speaker and content creator who actively participates in events highlighting diversity and representation in the media. She has spoken openly about her experiences of racism, particularly following her appointment to RTÉ, and has campaigned for improved measures to tackle online abuse.

In 2024, Zainab published her debut novel, Braids Take a Day. The story follows Abidemi, a young woman preparing for her last summer at home in Ennistymon before heading to college. While looking forward to learning new braids and exploring her budding friendship with Jack, Abi meets a fascinating woman from Nigeria. The meeting unravels secrets that challenge Abi's identity and family.
