Martine McDonagh

Martine McDonagh is an English fiction author of three novels. Her most recent Narcissism for Beginners was a 2019 People's Book Prize finalist longlisted for the Guardian Not The Booker Prize and shortlisted for the People’s Book Prize.

Martine McDonagh was born in Coulsdon, Surrey. She has a Master's in Creative Writing from Manchester Met and another in Scriptwriting from Goldsmiths, for which she received a distinction.

Martine McDonagh has worked in the music industry for 30 years. Martine has taught Music Business Professional Practice at BIMM in Brighton and Canterbury Christ Church University. She has also worked as a script consultant for the filmmaker Kyoko Miyake and developed a TV series about women’s football.

Her first novel, I Have Waited and You Have Come (2006), was longlisted for the Authors’ Club First Novel Award. Martine devised and ran the MA Creative Writing & Publishing at West Dean College in Sussex and had a successful career in the music industry as an artist manager before that.

Narcissism for Beginners tells the coming of age of Sonny, who was kidnapped by his guru father and taken to live in Brazil. It was published in Germany as Familie und andere Trostpreise (Family and Other Consolation Prizes) and was optioned for TV by Hat Trick Productions.

Martine McDonagh is a Royal Literary Fund Fellow at Chichester University. She lives in London.
