Cristiane Serruya

Cristiane Serruya is a Brazilian author known for her romance novels. Her work often explores themes related to women's human rights and sexual freedom, in line with her thesis topic at the Faculty of Law.

Serruya holds a degree in Law from the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro and a master's degree in Business Law. Cristiane has also studied Fine Arts in Florence and Turin, Italy, as well as in England, Switzerland, France, and Brazil.

She transitioned from a twenty-two-year career as a lawyer to a full-time writer in 2011, a move she describes as the missing piece of the puzzle in her life. Although Portuguese is her mother tongue, Serruya initially published her novels in English, later taking on the task of translating her works into Spanish, Italian, and French due to dissatisfaction with external translators.

In February 2019, Serruya faced allegations of plagiarism when fellow romance novelist Courtney Milan and other authors accused her of copying passages from their works verbatim. The controversy, widely discussed under the Twitter hashtag #CopyPasteCris, led to Serruya pulling her novel Royal Love (2018) from sale and withdrawing it from the Rita competition for romance novels.

Serruya responded to the accusations by blaming a ghostwriter she had hired through the freelance services marketplace Fiverr, who she claimed was responsible for the plagiarized content. Following the incident, Serruya's Twitter account was deleted, and she took down all works associated with the ghostwriter in question.

Cristiane Serruya resides in Rio de Janeiro with her husband, two daughters, and her Sheltie.
