Arnold Bennett was an English novelist, playwright, essayist, and critic. He is best known for his exploration of social and psychological themes. Bennett released over twenty-five non-fiction works, of which around eight fall into the category of "self-improvement."

The most long-lasting of these is How to Exist on 24 Hours a Day (1908), a book that remains available for purchase and has been translated into various languages.

Enoch Arnold Bennett was born in Hanley, Staffordshire, England. He had a relatively modest upbringing in a family of low income. Despite the financial constraints, he was passionate about reading from a young age.

Bennett attended the Middle School in Newcastle-under-Lyme, where he displayed a writing talent. Teachers recognized his literary potential and encouraged him to pursue a career in writing.

Arnold Bennett debuted with a collection of short stories, A Man from the North, published in 1898. It explores the lives and experiences of ordinary people in Victorian England.

Bennett's career gained momentum in the early 20th century. He became associated with the "Edwardian era," known for focusing on social change and self-reflection.

One of his most acclaimed works is the "Five Towns" series, which consists of novels set in the industrial region of the Staffordshire Potteries, where he grew up. The series included titles such as Anna of the Five Towns (1902) and The Old Wives' Tale (1908), both of which showcased his ability to delve into the complexities of character development and societal dynamics.

Bennett's writing style was characterized by its attention to detail, psychological insight, and witty observations of human behavior. He was also a prolific essayist and critic, contributing columns to newspapers and magazines, where he offered his thoughts on literature, culture, and society.

Arnold Bennett passed away on March 27, 1931, at the age of 63. He died of typhoid fever, a bacterial infection that can cause severe illness.
